Abstract:Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP) is a minimally invasive flapless periodontal pocket surgical procedure proposed by Gregg and McCarthy in 1990 and approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2004. Nd:YAG laser with the wavelength of 1064 nm may assist in the formation of new attachments, which is considered as an alternative therapy to traditional periodontal surgery. It was found that LANAP could decompose pathogenic bacteria by laser beam, eliminate damaged periodontal tissue, promote the regeneration of damaged periodontal tissue, and form attachment on the root surface of newly formed connective tissue. LANAP based on Nd:YA not only focuses on sterilization, but also aims to reduce the causes of disease. At present,Nd:YAG laser as an auxiliary tool of traditional periodontal treatment receives increasing attention, which can also be applied to the treatment of peri-implantitis and diabetes periodontal disease.
