Abstract:Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease caused by periodontal tissue infection. Its main pathogenic factors are the biofilm formed by pathogenic organisms and the immune factors of the host body. The main manifestation of the disease is the induction of bone resorption, which damages a variety of dental supporting tissues including the gums, periodontal ligaments and alveolar bone.At present, the most conservative and most commonly used treatment is drug therapy.Due to the physiological functions of the mouth such as secreting saliva and chewing, the retention time of drugs in the periodontal injury site is greatly reduced. Moreover, its complex pathogenesis makes it difficult to effectively treat periodontitis, but it also promotes the replacement of drug therapy. This review highlights the recent literature on advanced probiotic drug therapies for the treatment of periodontitis, including the efficacy of probiotics and epigenetics for the treatment of periodontitis. Some of these technologies are still in the basic experimental stage, and some have entered clinical trials. The purpose of this article is to review the recent progress of probiotics in the treatment of periodontitis, hoping to confirm its potential application value in future studies.
