Oral hypofunction in the elderly:A Review of the Literature

Abstract:Oral tissues will occur some age-related changes and oral functions (chewing,swallowing,sensation,etc) will decrease along with the growth of the age and the influence of diseases in the senior citizens.Oral health is one of the most important components of overall health and well-being.Not only does oral hypofunction cause a decline in oral health-related quality of life,but also increases risk of adverse health outcomes,such as malnutrition,sarcopenia,and cognitive decline.We can prevent oral function deterioration by making correct assessment and systematic intervention at an early stage of oral hypofunction.This paper aims to enhance medical staff's understanding of oral hypofunction.Meanwhile,which provides reference for our country to evaluate and intervene oral hypofunction in the elderly.
