Epidemiological characteristics of 451 elderly oral emergency patients in general hospital

Abstract:Objective To analyze the epidemiological characteristics of elderly oral emergency patients in comprehensive hospitals,summarize their medical characteristics,and provide guidance for the treatment and emergency management of elderly oral emergency patients.Methods Elderly patient cases in dental emergency from December in 2021 to December in 2023 were collected.Clinical data of patients were retrospectively analyzed,including gender,age,disease type,and general health status.Results A total of 451 elderly oral emergency patients were collected including 249 males and 202 females,with a male to female ratio of 1.23︰1 and an average age of 60~102(70.14±5.31) years.There is no significant difference in the number of visits for elderly patients between 2022 and 2023.The top three diseases among elderly emergency dental patients are maxillofacial trauma (49.00%),oral bleeding (19.07%) and interstitial infection(11.31%);Hypertension(53.66%),cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases (31.93%)and diabetes(29.49%) are common systemic diseases in elderly patients with dental emergency.Conclusions As a special population,elderly patients are excluded from the management and treatment of dental emergencies when seeking medical treatment in dental emergency room.Based on their overall condition,medical history inquiry and medication use should be strengthened,humanistic care should be increased,alleviate patient psychological distress and avoid unexpected events
