Abstract:Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease that leads to the progressive destruction of dental supporting tissues. Its occurrence is related to the impaired host immunity caused by periodontal pathogens. As the sixth most common chronic inflammatory disease worldwide, the diagnosis of periodontitis still lacks accurate and non-invasive techniques, especially in the early stages.S100 protein is a class of calcium-binding proteins that play an important role in inflammation and immune response.S100 protein is involved in many biological processes such as differentiation, proliferation and migration of various diseases including periodontitis through its intracellular or extracellular functions. However, the specific relationship between S100 protein family and periodontitis has not been clarified. In this paper,S100A8/A9,S100A12 and S100A4 proteins were discussed from the aspects of their structure, function, classification, regulatory mechanism, and relationship with periodontitis, and the potential mechanism of their involvement in periodontitis and bone resorption was discussed.
