Abstract:Objective To observe the short-term clinical effect of Er:YAG laser in periodontal non-surgical treatment of moderate and severe chronic periodontitis. Methods A total of 24 patients with moderate or severe chronic periodontitis, with 96 quadripartite regions,464 teeth and 1412 sites, were randomly divided into 2 groups by mouth division design. The experimental group was treated with Er:YAG laser. And control group was treated with traditional instruments. The positive site rates of plaque index, gingival index, probing depth, attachment loss and probing bleeding were recorded before treatment and 6,12 and 24 weeks after treatment, and were statistically analyzed. Results The results of 6 weeks,12 weeks and 24 weeks after surgery showed that the plaque index, gingival index, probing depth, attachment loss and probing bleeding were improved(P<0.05).In the moderate depth periodontal pocket group(4~6mm),there was no significant difference between the two treatments at the corresponding time point after surgery. In the deep pocket group(≥7mm),Er:YAG laser treatment had a stronger advantage in improving the depth of investigation and loss of attachment, and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).Conclusions Er:YAG laser alone has better short-term clinical effect than traditional treatment on deep periodontitis in patients with moderate and severe chronic periodontitis.Er:YAG laser can be applied to the non-surgical treatment of periodontal disease alone, but the long-term efficacy still needs further study.
