Abstract:Objective:To investigate the effect of glycemic control on the periodontal index in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (≥60 years).Methods:256 elderly patients with type 2 diabetes were selected and divided into 2 groups according to the value of glycosylated hemoglobin:good blood glucose control (≤ 8%) and poor blood glucose control (> 8%).Pocket depth (PD),attachment loss (AL),gingival index (GI),sulcus bleeding index (SBI),plaque index (PLI),dental calculus detection rate and furcation involvement were observed. Results:The age distribution, brushing habits, educational level, cigarette consumption and BMI index were similar in all groups (P>0.05).Compared with the poor blood glucose control group, the patients in good group had shorter duration and higher economic income (P=0.006,P=0.001).In addition, there was no significant difference in PD,PLI,and calculus detection rate between good and poor groups (P>0.05),but SBI,GI,AL and root bifurcation were statistically significant (P=0.001,P=0.002,P=0.0017,P=0.029).Conclusion:The higher the concentration of glycosylated hemoglobin in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes, the more severe destruction of periodontal tissue.
