Abstract:Objective:The aim of this study was to investigate the possible relationship between thiocyanate (SCN-) and the pathogenesis of recurrent aphthous ulcer(RAU).Methods:Sixty elderly patients (28 males,32 females) having been diagnosed with minor recurrent aphthous ulcer (MiRAU) and sixty age-matched healthy persons (30 males,30 females) being taken normal medical examination in our hospital were enrolled. After an overnight fast,5 ml venous blood and 3ml of unstimulated saliva samples were obtained fiom the patients with current active lesion of RAU (Group A1),the same patients in the remission phase of RAU (Group A2),healthy persons (Group B),respectively. The concentrations of saliva and serum SCN were measured by the spectrophotometric method.Results:A1,A2 group saliva SCN-concentration were 00.61± 0.29mmol/L、0.64± 0.3 1mmol/L,and there was no significant difference between the groups (P=0.052 > 0.05).The serum thiocyanate concentration of group A2 (24.06± 10.3 l p mol/L) was significantly higher than that of group A1 (20.39± 8.85μmol/L;P=0.000 <0.05).The concentrations of salivary and serum thiocyanate of group B were 1.05±0.61mmol/L、36.60± 14.81 mol/L,which were significantly higher than those values of group A1 and group A2 (P=0.000 <0.05).Conclusion:As a kind of nonenzymatic antioxidant,SCN-may have some relevance to recurrent aphthous ulcer.
