Clinical effect of nickel-titanium instrument ProTaper combined with ultrasonic washing machine on the one-time root canal treatment for dead pulp teeth in the elderly patients

Abstract：Objective: To observe the clinical effect of nickel-titanium instrument ProTaper combined with ultrasonic washing machine on the one-time root canal treatment for dead pulp teeth in the elderly patients. Methods:120 teeth with clinical diagnosis of dental pulp necrosis and chronic apicitis were included. The patients were 61-83 (71.3 ±5.8) years old. All patients were randomly divided into one-time-visit group and two-time-visit group with the application of nickel-titanium instrument ProTaper combined with ultrasonic washing machine, with 60 cases in each group. The main indicators of clinical observation were self-reported pain after one week of operation with the reference of clinical examination, postoperative pain rate of comprehensive evaluation of 6 months, and X ray film and clinical evaluation of the cure rate after 2 years. Results: There was no significant difference of postoperative pain after one week between one-time-visit group (40.0%) and two-time-visit group (33.3%) (P>0.05). The curve rates after 6 months and 2 years were 73.31%and 78.3%for the one-time-visit group, and 71.4%and 73.8%for the two-time-visit group. However, there was no significant difference of the both curve rates mentioned above between two groups (P>0.05). Conclusion:The application of nickel-titanium instrument ProTaper combined with ultrasonic washing machine for the treatment of the elderly infection root canal filling with one-time visit, can effectively reduce the degree of postoperative pain, and can decrease the visit times, with favorable clinical effects.
