Abstract:Objective:To evaluate the experimental periodontitis induced by ligature with silk suture and steel-wire plus high sugar and soft diet in rats after inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) resection. Methods: Eighty SPF Wistar male rats (2 months of age) were divided into five groups (P1, P2,P3 , P4and N) randomly. The surgical transection of the IAN was applied to the three experimental groups P1, P2 , P4. Group P4 and N without any ligature were fed following the routine method after the surgery;Group P1, P3with silk suture ligature and P2 with steel-wire ligature around the cervix of the first mandible molars were provided with high-carbonhydrate diet after the surgery every day. Specimens were taken at the first, second, fourth, and sixth week and observed by clinical, and histological examination. Results: It was shown that the animal model of experimental periodontitis had not been established in the Group P3 and N; and had been successfully established in the Group P1, P2and P3. The damage of periodontal tissue in Group P1 appeared earlier and was more serious than the Group P2 and P3. Conclusion: Ligature by silk suture plus high sugar and soft diet can easily induce experimental periodontitis in rats after IAN resection.
