Abstract:Objective: To investigate the feasibility of observing profile morphology and measuring thickness of softtissue in maxillary anteriorteeth using cone-beam CT (referred to as CB CT ). Methods: Mouth opening device was used to retract the cheeks and tongue from the facial soft tissue and palatal masticatory mucosa, respectively. Maxillofacial area of a healthy adult male was scanned by cone-beam CT and the data was reconstructed. The measurement was operated on the sagittal plane im ages through long axis. The labial mucosa thickness was obtained at six different sites (from gingival margin to 3mm apically from the crestof alveolar ridge); The thickness of palatalmucosa was obtained atone site (1mm apically from the crestofalveolarridge). The measurementwas carried outin two rounds by five observers. The thickness of the soft tissue was calibrated and operated three times by five observers in the first round. And the measurement was repeated with an internalofone week by one observer. Results: Tooth, alveolarbone and softtissue can be distinguished on the im age of CB CT clearly. Pvalue of ANOVA at each site was 0.476, 0.698, 0.179, 0.160, 0.301, 0.072 and 0.715 respectablely between different observers.Tvalue between the two rounds of measurement was 0.200 (P = 0.848). Conclusions: One case measurement of softtissue thickness in anterior region by CB CT showed highly accuracy and good repeatability.
