Abstract:Sudden sensorineural hearing loss(SSNHL)is a common emergency in otolaryngology, with viral infection being one of its primary etiologies.Herpes simplex virus(HSV)is considered a potential pathogen associated with this condition.Among SSNHL patients with HSV infection, adults are predominantly infected with HSV-1 and exhibit significant variability in prognosis, whereas neonates are mainly infected with HSV-2,often accompanied by central nervous system damage, leading to severe hearing loss.Regarding treatment, some experimental and clinical studies suggest that combination therapy with corticosteroids and antiviral agents may be effective, although related evidence remains conflicting. This article reviews recent research advances in HSV-associated SSNHL from four perspectives—epidemiology, clinical evidence, pathological mechanisms, and therapeutic progress—to provide insights for etiological studies and clinical subtyping of SSNHL.
