Abstract:Cholesteatoma is a non-neoplastic cystic lesion located in the middle ear that can lead to deafness. It is characterized by abnormal growth of keratinized squamous epithelium, leading to erosion of structures in the middle ear space and adjacent bones. This condition can lead to various serious complications.Currently, cholesteatoma is routinely treated with surgery. However, the high recurrence rate after surgery significantly impacts patients'quality of life. Moreover, the challenges and risks associated with revision surgery are significant.Consequently, preventive strategies for this condition are needed to reduce ear-related morbidity. In this review,we examined the most recent literature to summarize risk factors and prevention strategies for recurrence after surgical treatment of cholesteatoma. The aim is to reduce the recurrence of cholesteatoma in clinical settings and provide evidence to improve the effectiveness of cholesteatoma surgery.
