A Case of Chronic Otitis Media Complicated with Cerebrospinal Fluid Leak and Encephalocele with a Literature Review
Abstract:Encephalocele refers to the protrusion of brain tissue along with its covering dura mater through a cranial bone defect into the extracranial space. According to its etiology, it can be classified into congenital, traumatic, iatrogenic, and infection-related types [1]. The incidence of encephalocele is low, approximately 1/35,000, and only 10% involve the skull base [2]. In the field of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery, encephalocele is commonly seen in nasal and craniofacial surgery, while cases in otology are rare. Cases combined with chronic otitis media are even rarer. Using keywords such as "complications of chronic otitis media", "encephalocele", "middle ear encephalocele", "temporal bone defect", and "cerebrospinal fluid otorrhea", we searched databases including CNKI, Wanfang, Web of Science, and PubMed, but found no relevant reports. To enhance the awareness of otologists regarding this disease, reduce surgical risks, and avoid serious complications such as cerebrospinal fluid leakage and brain tissue injury, we report a case of chronic otitis media complicated with encephalocele found during surgery.
