Application of CBL Combined with PBL in Training of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery Residents

Abstract:Objective To report application of case based learning(CBL)and problem-based learning(PBL)in training of otorhinolaryngology head and neck surgery residents.Methods A total of 65 physicians undergoing standardized resident training in otorhinolaryngology head and neck surgery at Jiaxing Second Hospital between July 2019 and December 2021 were retrospectively enrolled,of whom 30 received traditional training between July 2019 and July 2020(control group),and study 35 received training under the CBL combined with PBL model between August 2020 and December 2021(study group).End of training assessment covering knowledge,case analysis and surgical skills and satisfaction by faculties and trainees were compared between the two groups.Results The total score as well as scores of knowledge,case analysis and surgical skills were all higher in the study group than in the control group(P<0.05).For the faculties,scores on stimulating interests and cultivating teamwork ability in the study group were higher than in the control group(P<0.05),whereas for the trainees,scores on stimulating interests and cultivating abilities of problem-solving,clinical thinking,data retrieval,communication and expression and teamwork was higher in the study group than in the control group(P<0.05).Conclusion Application of CBL combined with PBL in otorhinolaryngology head and neck surgery resident training can better stimulate interests and cultivate abilities,which is beneficial to overall development of specialty capabilities.
