Abstract:Middle ear cholesteatoma is a non-neoplastic tumor characterized by the abnormal proliferation of squamous epithelial cells in the middle ear, which invade the adjacent bone structures and cause extensive local tissue destruction. It can lead to various clinical manifestations such as ear discharge, hearing loss, tinnitus, peripheral facial paralysis, and vertigo. At present, the mechanism of its occurrence and development is yet to be fully elucidated. However, with continuous research and discoveries in microbiome, the relationship between pathogenesis and mechanism of local invasion in middle ear cholesteatoma and the microbiota has been gradually revealed. This is a review of this correlation.
