Abstract:Objective To report speech, spatial hearing and hearing qualities in cochlear implant users with single-sided deafness(SSD)or asymmetric hearing loss(AHL).Methods In this study,16 cochlear implant(CI)users with SSD(n=11)or AHL(n=5)whose native language was Mandarin Chinese were included.Improvement in speech perception, spatial hearing and sound quality before and 2 years after CI,including changes in subscales, were compared.CI benefits were also compared between patients with SSD and AHL.Results The total SSQ score and scores of all three dimensions improved at 2 years after CI(P<0.05),including a significant increase in the four subscales related to speech comprehension,in both SSD/AHL patients.Perceptions of sound location, distance and movement also improved, resulting in significantly eased listening efforts(Z=-2.70,P=0.004).Although sound quality, naturalness, recognition and segregation appeared to be improved, there was no statistically significant difference.Benefits after cochlear implant surgery showed no significant difference between patients with SSD and AHL.Conclusion Cochlear implantation can improve speech perception, spatial hearing and sound quality while reducing hearing fatigue in most patients with SSD/AHL.
