Abstract:Hearing loss is a global issue that affects the lives of billions of people.Sensorineural hearing loss can be categorized into three main types based on etiology:i.e.noise induced,age-related and genetic hearing loss.Cochlear immune microenvironment(CIM)is a crucial regulator of cochlear homeostasis.Macrophages,as the primary executors in the CIM,play a pivotal role in the development and progression of hearing loss. This article discusses the roles of CIM as represented by cochlear macrophages in hearing loss by various etiologies.A thorough understanding of the regulatory mechanisms by macrophages can contribute to the development of novel preventive and therapeutic strategies to combat hearing loss.
