Abstract:Vestibular dysfunction resulting from diabetes is classified as a diabetic complication, characterized by clinical manifestations such as imbalance,instability,dizziness,and/or vertigo. The potential mechanisms underlying the detrimental effects of diabetes on the vestibular peripheral system encompass a multitude of interactive factors, including advanced glycation end products, oxidative stress, elevated intracellular Ca2+concentration,mitochondrial dysfunction, insulin resistance,caspase-3 activation, and microvascular disease. These factors collectively impact the structure and functionality of vestibular nerves and hair cells, ultimately leading to diabetes-related damage in the peripheral vestibular system and facilitating the progression of diabetic vestibular dysfunction. This review elucidates the potential pathological mechanisms underlying diabetic vestibular complications, thereby enhancing our comprehension of the intricate association between diabetes and the peripheral vestibular system. Moreover,it offers valuable insights for diagnosing, treating, and prognosticating clinically relevant disorders.
