Abstract:Presbycusis, also known as age-related hearing loss(ARHL),is one of the most common sensory impairments in the elderly, characterized primarily by progressive bilateral hearing decline.Currently, the main interventions are hearing aids and cochlear implants, yet these face challenges including high costs and limited efficacy, with fundamental therapeutic strategies still under investigation.Peripheral ARHL represents one of the most prevalent forms of ARHL,where excessive production of reactive oxygen species and oxidative substances due to cochlear oxidative stress directly damages critical structures such as hair cells, spiral ganglion neurons, stria vascularis and mitochondria, leading to hearing damage. This article provides an overview of the molecular mechanisms of oxidative stress and their role in peripheral ARHL.
