A Case of Chronic Myeloid Leukemia Presenting with Otorhinolaryngological Symptoms as the Initial Manifestation
Abstract:Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a malignant tumor caused by clonal proliferation of hematopoietic stem cells in the bone marrow. The most common initial symptoms of CML are weakness, abdominal distension, abdominal pain, fever, and night sweats. However, CML presenting with ear-related symptoms such as tinnitus, hearing loss, and vertigo as the initial manifestation is rare. This case report describes a patient with CML who initially experienced two different types of vertigo: benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) and persistent vertigo, followed by sudden hearing loss and tinnitus in both ears. This clinical presentation is rarely reported. Herein, we present this case. This study was approved by the Ethics Committee of The First Hospital of Tianjin Medical University (IRB2024-YX-400-01), and the patient and family provided informed consent.
