Abstract:Age-related hearing loss(ARHL),also known as presbyopia,is a progressive, symmetrical, sensorineural hearing loss caused by age-related degenerative changes.ARHL is a multifactorial disease mediated by the complex interplay among aging, and environmental and genetic factors, and its mechanism of action has not been fully elucidated.Studies on the aging cochlea in humans can be costly and difficult due to many limitations, and the use of animal models of ARHL can provide valid information on the physiological, histological, genetic and molecular mechanisms associated with hearing and aging. In this review,we describe the value of animal models of ARHL,and discuss and compare some established animal models of ARHL.Finally we highlight the potential of emerging animal models of ARHL,in an attempt to facilitate studies on mechanisms of ARHL.
