Abstract:Objective To report outcomes of non-surgical correction of auricular deformities with cartilage adhesion in newborn infants. Methods Clinical characteristics and therapeutic outcomes auricular deformities accompanied by cartilage adhesion in 63 infants(93 ears,30 bilateral and 33 unilateral)were reported, including types of deformity, treatment time, treatment outcomes, complications and recurrence rate. Results Based on Byrd classification, deformities included cup ear(n=37,39.78%),helical abnormalities(n=26,27.95%),lop ear(n=12,12.90%)and combined ear deformities(n=18,19.35%).Age at the time of intervention was 5~95 days(mean=5.08±0.65 days),and the average duration of treatment was 30.16±0.35 days. Two patients(3.17%)dropped out due to complications and 61 cases were followed up for 3 months.Complete resolution and significant improvement were achieved in 47 ears(50.54%),some improvement in(43 ears(46.24%),and no change in 3 ears(3.23%).Recurrence were seen in 3 ears(3.17%)and improved upon resuming treatment.Complications occurred in 7 cases(10 ears,10.75%),including skin injury(4 cases,4 ears),eczema(2 cases,4 ears)and auricular crus protrusion(1 case). Conclusion Auricular cartilage adhesions can manifest as various types of auricle deformities.Non-invasive correction within 42 days of birth is very effective.Delayed correction leads to reduced success rate and increased risk for complications.
