Abstract:Objective To investigate the effects of stimulating electrodes diameter on electrically evoked auditory nerve compound action potentials(ECAP)in guinea pigs. Methods Twelve healthy guinea pigs(24 ears)were randomly assigned to receive uses a silver ball electrode with a diameter of 0.7 mm(Group A)or 1 mm(group B)(n=6 in each group,12 ears). The electrode was placed on the round window membrane. The the rate of ECAP extraction, threshold, amplitude and latency,as well as amplitude and latency of electrically evoked summitting potentials(ESP),were compared between the two groups.Ressults ESP thresholds were lower and the latency longer in the group with the 0.7 mm stimulating electrode as compared to the 1 mm electrode group(P=0.02land P<0.05,respectively).However,there were no significant differences in the rate of extraction, threshold, amplitude and latency of ECAPs or in ESP amplitudes and thresholds between the two groups. Conclusion Round window ECAPs can be consistently recorded in guinea pigs under general anesthesia, and stimulating electrode size does not affect their extraction rate and thresholds, although ESP shows shorter latencies when using smaller diameter stimulating electrodes.Waveform differentiation in ECAP and ESP is better when larger diameter electrodes are used.
