Abstract:Objective To report vestibular function in patients with sudden deafness and no dizziness. Methods A total of 118 cases of unilateral sudden deafness(sudden deafness group)treated from September 2020 to April 2022 in the otolaryngology Department of the Xinhua-Chongming Regional Medical Consortium were selected and categorized as total deafness(n=57)or non-total deafness(n=61).A total of 15 adults with normal hearing were included as the control group.Vestibular test results were compared between the groups. Results The vestibular function was normal in the control group, and showed significant difference compared with the sudden deafness groups(P<0.05),but not between the non-total and total deafness groups(P>0.05).In the non-total deafness group, complete recovery was achieved in 2 cases, significant improvement in 15 cases, some improvement in 22 cases and no improvement in 22 cases. Conclusion Even in sudden deafness patients without dizziness, there is still a possibility of vestibular dysfunction, likely indicating suppression by central compensation to alleviate dizziness symptoms.
