Abstract:Middle ear cholesteatoma is a non-neoplastic lesion composed of hyper-proliferative keratinizing squamous epithelium and sub-epithelial connective tissue. It can lead to a variety of serious complications and even life-threatening conditions by eroding surrounding bony structures.Surgical resection is the only effective treatment for mid-dle ear cholesteatoma, although recurrence rate can be high. Therefore, understanding its pathogenesis is of great impor-tance to improve treatment outcomes.Bone destruction and resorption is the characteristic biological behavior of middle ear cholesteatoma.Studies suggest that bone resorption may be an important reason for the invasiveness and destruction in middle ear cholesteatoma. Therefore, this article reviews the possible mechanism of bone resorption in middle ear cholesteatoma,in order to provide new ideas to improve treatment and reduce recurrence.
