Differences between Care-Seeking and Non-Care Seeking Tinnitus Patients

Abstract:Objective To report differences between tinnitus patients seeking care and those not seeking care.Methods In this cross-sectional study,a questionnaire inquiring multiple health-related areas,including demography,tinnitus features,general health,psychological status,audiological characteristics,noise environment and unhealthy hab-its,was sent to the subjects.Subjects'willingness to seek tinnitus care was also evaluated.Tinnitus severity was as-sessed using a tinnitus functional index.Data were compared between care-seeking and non-care-seeking goups.Results A total of 1,864 people participated in the survey,and 216(11.6%)were diagnosed with tinnitus,of whom 73 sought or planned to seek further diagnosis and treatment.Tinnitus was more likely to be persistent with variable loudness,as well as hearing loss,and TFI scores tended to be higher in care-seeking patients than in non-care-seeking individuals.Con-clusion The main differences between care-seeking tinnitus patients and those not seeking care include characteristics of tinnitus and hearing loss.
