Abstract:Objective To report effects of continuous positive airway pressure(CPAP)on middle ear pressure in patients with OSAHS.Methods Patients with OSAHS(n=75)were assigned to three groups based on the CPAP they used,i.e.low,medium and high(<10,10-15 and>15 cmH2O).All subjects received standard tympanometry the first time they wore CPAP devices, and again after 3 and 6 months of CPAP treatment.Correlation between CPAP and mid-dle ear pressure was analyzed and compared at different CPAP therapy intervals. Results The mean middle ear pressure was 19.4,58.4 and 96.3 daPa for the three groups after primary CPAP treatment, but increased to 23.2,63.5 and 102.6 daPa at 3 months and 23.4,64.3 and 103.1 daPa after 6 months of CPAP treatment, respectively.Middle ear pressure was positively correlated with CPAP pressure after 3 months of treatment in these OSAHS patients(r=0.768,P<0.01).Conclusion CPAP treatment has some effects on middle ear pressure, which is directly proportional to CPAP pressure. After 3 months of CPAP treatment, middle ear pressure in the OSAHS patients can increased and then gradually stabi-lize with no additional significant change at 6 months.
