Abstract:Complications after cochlear implantation can be categorized as delayed when occurring in more than 3 months after operation. We review delayed complications after cochlear implantation and their managements in the fol-lowing categories: (1) infection related complications, including otitis media, endocochlear inflammation, cerebrospinal fluid leak, meningitis, and cholesteatoma; (2) skin flap complications, including minor complications such as localized welling, and major complications such as soft tissue infection or skin flap necrosis; (3) device related complications, in-cluding device failure, receiver-stimulator complications (such as migration, extrusion, magnet reversion, or foreign body reaction), and electrode complications (such as migration, misdirection, or extrusion); (4) neural or sensory compli-cations, including facial nerve issues (such as facial palsy, facial nerve stimulation, or taste problems), vestibular compli-cations, tinnitus, and pain. Cochlear implant users should receive lifetime follow-up for potential delayed complications for prompt attention and intervention.
