Abstract:Eosinophilic otitis media (EOM) is a relatively rare, intractable, middle ear disease, characterized by the presence of a highly viscous yellow effusion containing eosinophils. It occurs mainly in patients with bronchial asth-ma or allergic rhinitis, is resistant to conventional treatments for otitis media, such as tympanostomy tube surgery and radical mastoidectomy, and can lead to serious complications such as hearing loss. Systemic or topical steroid adminis-tration is the most effective treatment for eosinophilic inflammation. Because this disease is less common than chronic otitis media, patients are often misdiagnosed as having chronic otitis media and miss opportunities for most effective treatments. It is therefore important to improve the understanding of eosinophilic otitis media and its diagnosis and treat-ment. This article summarizes the pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, imaging characteristics and treatment methods of eosinophilic otitis media.
