Abstract:Objective To summarize data on articles published in China over otology diseases including literature types, year of publication, citation frequency, research topic, core authors, research institutions and funding support, for the purpose of facilitating further research. Methods Bibliometric and statistical methods were employed to analyze 23939 papers retrieved from the CNKI. Results The number of relevant otology literatures showed a rising trend from 2006 to 2013, to the highest level in 2013, accounting for 11.25%of total CNKI literature. After 2013, the number de-clined slightly. Of the articles, 34.88% were never cited. Research mainly focused on deafness, tinnitus, vertigo, otitis media and facial nerve, with less on cochlear implants, vestibular schwannomas, bone anchored hearing aid (BAHA), otomicrosurgery, perforation of tympanic membrane, myringoplasty, dysaudia, otitis externa, cholesteatoma, labyrin-thine fistula and skull base surgery. There was a significant number of core authors, and hospitals were the main re-search institutions. Most research projects received no funding. Most media carrying the articles were medical journals. Conclusions Research on otology diseases is growing rapidly, although improvement is needed regarding research strength, content and citation.
