Abstract:Objective To report therapeutic effects of a Chinese herbal preparation–Er Jing San, in relation to ad-ministration modes and duration, in treating active chronic suppurative otitis media. Methods A sample of 180 cases (192 ears) of chronic suppurative otitis media treated at Beijing Chinese Medicine Hospital from March 2014 to January 2015 were randomly divided into a treatment and a control group, with 90 cases in each group. Cases in the treatment group were treated with Er Jing San, while those in the control group were treated with Ofloxacin ear drops. The rate of complete disease resolution and improvement at different treatment time points were compared between the two groups. Results The overall rate of effectiveness was 87.6% in the treatment group and 58.9% in the control group (P<0.05). Conclusions Er Jing San appears to yield treatment outcomes superior over Ofloxacin ear drops in treating active chron-ic suppurative otitis media. Treatment using dry powder preparation seems to hold obvious advantages with improved safety as compared to treatment using fluid ear drops.
