Abstract:Objective To report auditory performance in the seniors with profound bilateral sensorineural hearing loss after cochlear implantation (CI). Methods Data from 14 patients with post-lingual deafness (aging from 62 to 76 years, mean=67.7 years) and a unilateral CI at the Navy General Hospital were collected and analyzed. Complications following the CI surgery were examined. Aided audiometric thresholds and speech results were collected at 3, 6 and 12 months after activation of the sound processor. Results The 14 CI operations were all successful without serious complications. Twelve months after activation of the sound processor, the mean aided audiometric threshold was 42.1±9.4 dB HL, mean monosyl-labic word recognition score was 43%±15%, mean sentence recognition sore in silence was 63%±17%, and mean auditory performance grade was 5.7±1.4. Eleven patients (78.6%) rated their CI benefits as very good or good. Conclusion Cochlear implantation is a safe and effective treatment for elderly patients with profound deafness. The majority of older people bene-fit from CI with significant improvement in speech recognition and auditory performance. Age should not be a limiting fac-tor for CI.
