Noise-induced hearing loss:a review of recent advances
HU Bohua
Abstract:Acoustic injury is a common cause of acquired hearing loss. This trauma is initiated by mechanical stress to cochlear structures, which causes a series of biological, pathological and molecular changes in damaged tissues. Interplay of these changes leads to sensory cell damage and causes various clinical symptoms including the losses of both hearing sensi-tivity and speech discrimination as well as tinnitus and hyperacusis. Because of its significant impacts on the quality of life in patients, it is essential to prevent such injury. Recently, researchers in hearing sciences have made significant progresses in studies on the biological and molecular mechanisms responsible for acoustic injury. These studies expand our understand-ing of the biological and molecular bases of acoustic injury, and importantly, reveal new therapeutic targets. Here, I briefly review recent developments in this field.
