Current Research on Sound Localization

Abstract：Mechanisms of the auditory system and current research status related to sound localization are reviewed. At present, the mechanism of sound localization by the auditory system using binaural auditory information is very clear, but the neural mechanisms of binaural information processing remain unclear. Some studies indicate that sound localization ability is improved in most hearing impaired people after hearing intervention. Also, sound localization ability is better in people with bilateral cochlear implants or one side cochlear implant plus hearing aid on the other side than in people with unilateral cochlear implant only.
