Abstract:Objective To report outcomes of post-aural injection of methylprednisolone in patients with flat-type sud-den hearing loss. Methods Cases of sudden hearing loss treated by the authors from 2011 to the present were reviewed and those with flat-type hearing loss were selected and divided into a post-aural injection group and a non-post-aural injection group, respectively. The rate of recovery and improvement over five frequency bands (125-250 Hz, 125-500 Hz, 500-2 kHz, 4-8 kHz and 250-4 kHz) were compared between the two groups. Results 1) The rate of complete recovery in the post-aural injection group was higher (P=0.04<0.05), although the overall effectiveness rate was not significantly different between the two groups (P=0.52>0.05). The post-aural injection group also showed more improvement over 125-250 Hz than the other group (P=0.03<0.05). Conclusions Post-aural injection of methylprednisolone as a treatment for flat-type sudden hearing loss is safe and effective, with higher efficacy over low frequencies than high frequencies.
