An etiological analysis in 340 patients with vertigo

Abstract:Objective To report etiology results in ENT patients with a chief complaint of vertigo in or-der to reduce the rate of misdiagnosis and inappropriate treatment. Methods A total of 340 ENT patients with a chief complaint of vertigo were included.Medical histories, presenting symptoms, physical examina-tion and lab tests results were collected and analyzed. Results Vertigo was present in all cases, and included peripheral vestibular vertigo (77.05%), BPPV (28.23%), central vestibular vertigo (8.82%), non-vestibular vertigo (10.30%), psychogenic vertigo (5.59%) and vertigo of unknown causes (3.82%). Conclusions The most common etiology of vertigo is of peripheral vestibular origin, with BPPV being the most common. Cen-tral vestibular vertigo appears to gradually increase along with age, while psychogenic vertigo usually occur in young and middle-aged patients. Clinicians needs to be highly aware of BPPV and psychogenic vertigo, al-though those dizziness diseases of low incidence should not be ignored.
