Abstract:Objective To report therapeutic effects of Eustachian tube catheterization and insufflation with inhalation of atomized glucocorticoid via an air compressor pump for the treatment of secretory otitis media (SOM). Methods Eighty six patients with secretory otitis media and no nasal cavity diseases seen from November 2012 to December 2013 were divided into two groups randomly (43 patients each). Patients in the study group were treated with Eustachian tube insufflation with inhalation of atomized glucocorticoid (Budesonide suspension) via an air compressor pump, while those in the control group received conventional Eustachian tube catheterization and insufflation. Both groups were treated with additional oral Eucalyptus Lemon Pinene Enteric Capsules. Results In the study group, SOM resolved in 83.7%(36/43) of patients, im-proved in 11.6%(5/43) of patients and remained unchanged in 4.7%(2/43) of patients. In the control group, SOM resolved in 58.1%(25/43) of patients, improved in 32.6%(14/43) of patients and remained unchanged in 3%(4/43) of patients. The differences in overall effectiveness between the two groups were statistically sig-nificant (P<0.05). Conclusion Eustachian tube catheterization and insufflation with inhalation of atomized glucocorticoid via an air compressor pump into the tympanic cavity is an effective treatment for SOM. It is safe and inexpensive, and requires a relatively short course of treatment.
