Abstract:[Abstrct]Objective To report results of otoscopy and tympanometry using different probe tones (226 Hz or 1000 Hz) in newborns who have failed DPOAEs screen to better understand the value of different probe tones in evaluating middle ear functions in infants. Methods Seventy one newborns (120 ears) who had failed DPOAE screening were randomly select-ed newborn to undergo tympanometry test with probe tones of 226 or 1000 Hz, plus otoscopy examinations. Their otoscopy results and tympanograms were analyzed. Results Among the 120 ears, otoscopy was abnormal in 41 ears (34.17%). With the 226 Hz probe tone, tympanogram showed abnormal patterns in 16 ears (13.33%), while tympanogram showed abnor-mal patterns in 47 ears (39.17%) with the 1000 Hz probe tone. The rates of abnormal otoscopy and abnormal tympanometry were significantly different (P<0.05) for the 226 Hz probe tone, but not for the 1000 Hz probe tone (P>0.05). Conclusion High frequency probe tones (1000 Hz) tympanometry is better correlated with otoscopy findings in newborns and may be more sensitive in diagnosing middle ear diseases than low frequency (226 Hz) probe tones.
