Abstract:Objective To study characteristics of language functions in hearing-impaired children. Meth-ods Two hundred and two hearing-impaired children at age of 3 to 6 years were assessed using the Language Function Evaluation for Hearing-Impaired Children questionnaire. Each child was evaluated at baseline and 6 months and 12 months later. Results The evaluation scores increased significantly as time went on (P=0.000<0.01). The older the hearing-impaired children were, the higher their scores of language functions evaluation (P<0.05). At baseline, scores in all hearing-impaired children were lower than in 3-year-old normal hearing children. After 12 months, hearing-impaired children of 3 to 4 years of age achieved age appropriate scores, while scores in those of 5 to 6 years of age remained lower than in children of similar ages. Conclusion Lan-guage evaluation scores in hearing-impaired children are generally lower than in normal hearing children of the same age, but will improve significantly after intervention. The earlier the intervention, the better the out-comes.
