Audiologic features of ethnic chinese patients with turner syndrome
Abstract:Objective To report hearing features of a group of Chinese patients with Turner syndrome and possible causative factors. Methods Eighteen patients diagnosed as TS (median age 12.50 years, range 5.5-16years) between May 2013 and Jul 2015, were included in this study. Medical history and karyotypes were recorded and otologic and audiologic evaluation was performed. Results Audiometric data in the 18 cases revealed normal hearing in 9/36 ears (25.00%), con-ductive hearing loss (CHL) in 15/36 ears (41.67%) and sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) in 12/36 ears (33.33%). Audio-grams among ears with SNHL were“flat”in 2 ears,“u-shaped”in 6 ears and“sloping-down”in 4 ears. Monosomy 45X/isochromosome and mosaicism were not associated with audiogram types (P=0.988>0.05). The bone conduction pure tone average threshold and bone conduction threshold at 4 kHz were correlated closely to age (P<0.01). Conclusions From our results, types of the chromosome in children with TS are not associated with audiogram patterns. However, bone conduction pure tone average threshold and bond conduction hearing threshold at 4 kHz has a linear relationship to aging. Regular otologic examination and continuous audiologic evaluation are crucial and necessary for determination of proper treatment.
