Study of the Treatment Effectiveness of the Idiopathic Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo of Elderly Patients

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the treatment effectiveness of the idiopathic benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BP?PV) of elderly patients with the automatic vestibular function diagnosis and therapy system(SRM—IV). Methods All of the 238 elderly idiopathic BPPV patients during October 2012 to October 2013 of the Armed Police General Hospital otolaryngology head and neck surgery were divided into two groups by age, and each one was divided into two subgroups by with or without un?derlying diseases (hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, cerebral infarction). Age 60 or more for the elderly group (n1=118), age<60 years old for young and middle-aged group (n=120), the therapeutic efficacy and the recurrence rate is used in the comparison. Results All patients were successfully cured, the curative effect of the two groups are similar, two groups of patients with or without underlying diseases had no effect on its curative effect (P equals 0.05 or higher).Respectively for 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, 12 months follow-up, BPPV recurrence rate difference between the two groups have statistical difference (P<0.05) .Conclusion The therapeutic efficacy of the elderly group and the young and middle-aged group are similar, but to the young and middle-aged group, elderly group BPPV patients have a higher recurrence rate.
