Diagnosis and Management in 8 Cases of Silent Otitis Media

Abstract:Objective To report diagnosis and treatment of silent oitis media cases. Methods This is a retrospective analysis of clinical characteristics and treatment in patients with silent otitis media. Results All 8 cases were misdiagnosed at least once. Their final diagnoses were confirmed by CT and surgical exploration. Granulation and cholesterol crystal present in 4 cases, and cholesteatoma in mastoid was discovered in the other 4 cases by surgical findings. Complete disease eradica?tion and healing were achieved in all cases. Conclusions For silent otitis media with intact eardrum, diagnosis can be greatly facilitated by temporal bone CT, followed by surgical management once diagnosis is confirmed.
