Abstract:Objective To investigate the effects of intense low frequency steady noise on hearing function and cochlear morphology in rats. Methods Forty-two rats were randomly divided into 2 groups, and were exposed to the intense low fre-quency (100Hz and 300Hz) steady noise at a level of more than 150 dB for 10 min. Auditory brainstem response (ABR) thresholds were tested before, at the end of, 3 days and 7 days after the exposure. The cochlea was collected at the end of and 7 days after the exposure for scanning electron microscopy. Results At the end of the exposure, ABR thresholds in each group were significantly greater than before exposure. There were only mild recovery at three days after the exposure. ABR thresh-olds in the 300 Hz group were greater than those in the 100 Hz group. Scanning electron microscopy showed severe damage of both outer and inner hair cells in both groups at the end of exposure. Conclusion Intense low frequency steady noise can lead to severe damage of hearing function and cochlear morphology in rats.
