Abstract:Objective This study aimed to analyze the symmetry of normal face using an established 3-D dynamic quantitative analysis system of facial motion(3-D ASFM)based on motion capture technique. Methods Twenty-eight healthy volunteers were recruited to perform a series of facial motions. A 3-dimensional dynamic quantitative analysis system was used to analyze their facial motion parameters. Differences between the left and right half of the face were compared using lo-gistic analysis methods. Results Asymmetry of the face existed in these healthy people, although with no obvious dominant side despite the fact that they were exclusively right-handed. Dominant side in different facial regions varied even in the same person. Statistically significant difference was found between the right and left mouth corners (P<0.05), where maximal move-ment of left mouth corner was 1.23 mm more than right. Conclusion Data on facial static and dynamic symmetry is obtained. Facial asymmetry commonly exits with no dominant side in healthy population.
