Abstract:Objective To investigate the effect of nasal steroids for the treatment of secretory otitis media in children after adenoidectomy and grommet insertion. Methods Fifty severn children with secretory otitis media were prospectively randomized into an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group received intranasal mometasone furoate monohydrate 100 ug per day, and the control group received ephedrine hydrochloride nasal drops. All patients were evaluat-ed at 4 week post-treatment. The effectiveness rate, relapse rate and middle ear infection rate were compared between the two groups. Results There was no statistically significant difference in the effectiveness rate between the two groups (p>0.05), but there were statistically significant differences in the relapse rate and middle ear infection rate between the two groups (p<0.05). Conclusions Nasal steroids in children with secretory otitis media after adenoidectomy and grommet inser-tion can reduce the recrudescence rate and middle ear infection rate.
