Therapeutic Potential and Applications of Hydrogen Gas from a Traditional Chinese Medicine Perspective

Abstract：In recent years,hydrogen has emerged as a medical gas with biological effects including anti-oxidation,anti-inflammation and anti-apoptosis.It has shown safety and clinical benefits in the treatment of disorders of the nervous system,cardiovascular and cerebrovascular system,metabolic system and malignancies,suggesting promising prospects for medical application.From the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM),existing studies on hydrogen remain scattered,and a systematic exposition is still lacking.Based on current evidence regarding the therapeutic actions of hydrogen,this article preliminarily discusses its medicinal value and applications from a TCM perspective.We propose that hydrogen may be analogous to Ying-Wei Qi and capable of harmonizing Ying and Wei,thus being applicable to the treatment of disorders related to Ying-Wei disharmony.Hydrogen may also be regarded as a"gaseous drug".Its combined use with Chinese herbal formulae may expand therapeutic options and provide new treatment strategies for certain clinical diseases.
