Abstract:This paper interprets the five categories of"Qi"(vital energy),"Shen"(spirit),"Xing"(form),"Xiang"(manifestation),and"Qi"(cycle)from the perspective of the framework of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)theory of life. After reviewing the traditional framework of the"Xing-Qi-Shen"perspective on life cognition,it elaborates on its rationality and existing deficiencies.By incorporating the two categories of"Xiang"and"Qi",which highlight the temporal structure of life, the aim is to further enhance the overall understanding of the TCM theory of life framework.A concept of life based on Qi transformation is developed, where Qi is regarded as the origin of life. The flow of Qi gives rise to the dominant Shen. The aggregation through Qi transformation forms Xing. The external manifestation of Qi transformation is presented as Xiang. The interaction between Qi transformation and the natural world generates rhythms, which are defined as Qi.This concept reflects the dynamic process of life.
