Abstract:This study adopts the perspective of functional equivalence theory and uses Guizhi decoction as a case study to compare the translations of the post-formula notes in Shang Han Lun by three translators:Luo Xiwen,Wei Naijie, and Li Zhaoguo. The analysis focuses on four key aspects:decoction preparation methods,post-administration precautions, symptom observation, and dietary guidelines. The findings reveal significant differences in the translation strategies employed by the three versions.Luo's translation is concise and straightforward, making it suitable for readers with a background in traditional Chinese medicine, but it lacks detail in information transmission.Wei's version remains faithful to the original text, demonstrating high levels of translation completeness and accuracy, though its literal approach may increase the difficulty of comprehension for some readers.Li's translation enhances the interpretability of the text by providing detailed explanations and annotations, but its complex sentence structures may affect readability.Overall,Wei's and Li's translations perform better in achieving functional equivalence. This study offers a new perspective on the English translation of postscript annotations in Shang Han Lun and contributes to the standardization and refinement of Chinese medical classics in international translation.
