Translation strategies of Traditional Chinese Medicine Epidemic Disease Terminology in the Post-Epidemic Era

Abstract:The theoretical framework of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) epidemiology has guided the development of TCM prevention and treatment protocols during the COVID-19 pandemic. In the post-pandemic era, standardization and internationalization of TCM epidemiology are crucial for its advancement. This paper comprehensively analyzes and contrasts the translation of TCM epidemiological terms in the English version of the Guidance for Corona Virus Disease 2019 Prevention,Control,Diagnosis and Management and relevant English literature on TCM,which focuses on various translation strategies employed for TCM epidemiological terms.Analysis has found that early scholars have adopted various translation strategies in the translation of TCM epidemiology, such as using Western medical terminology for domestication translation, using Chinese Pinyin for foreignization translation, and adding auxiliary texts for translation,to express the semantics of TCM epidemiology effectively. However, these translation methods still face problems such as inaccurate translation, ambiguity, and difficulty in understanding. This paper proposes standardized methods and strategies for translating TCM epidemiological terms, aiming to elevate the translation proficiency of TCM epidemiology-related terminology, enhance international recognition of TCM epidemiology, and provide translation strategies for the accurate dissemination of traditional Chinese medicine culture.
